Starting right… ?

Yes, I am still working on my woven sweater but thought I’d take a little knitting break, as I really enjoy that, too. So having this pink mohair/wool yarn at hand and the ever-ready Pi shawl pattern nearly in my head I thought… baby blanket. There’s aways a baby coming somewhere! lol But I found this lovely edging, much wider than those I usually tackle in my lace knitting dyslectic condition, I decided that I would start the New Year by not going back to the same ole, but actually DO one of these pretty edgings. This is only a 10 stitch repeat, but goes up to 32 stitches wide, a record for me! :O As usual, it started off rough but I finally found that if I count each row as I finish, making sure of the correct number of stitches, I can do pretty well. Another “innovation” is using the old sliding window that we used to teach some children to read; those who can’t keep focused on the row they are reading. It’s been a big help in this instance to me, as well. Not a problem I have reading, but in knitting I have to take my eyes off the pattern to watch what my hands are doing and I wasn’t always getting back to the correct line when I looked up again. But this is working and I’ve now worked a WHOLE REPEAT without having to tink!
I hope your New Year is starting off on the right foot, too!

Happy Christmas!

Happy Christmas, everyone! These are the socks my friend Tsuneko knitted me for a christmas present. I think she also spun the wool. I have very warm feet this morning in spite of the 21 dergee start to the day! Randy and I are enjoying our little holiday. We opened presents and had breakfast.
He’s out playing in the cold, getting things ready for the next snow… due tomorrow, I think… but it’s clouding up. Might be along later today. I’ve been goofing off in here talking to daughter and grandkids on the phone and answering xmas emails from friends and family.
But it’s noon now so I guess I’d better get dressed just in case of company later this afternoon!

Hope everyone is having a lovely and safe day!

Bare no more!

It’s kind of hard to pick out the mountain from the sky, both being pretty much white now. We even have a couple inches of fast melting snow down here in the yard. But it’s nice to see it up there where it will add it’s part to the water supply come summer. Too bad so much of it is wasted once it leaves us. I see there’s a bit more falling out there now. Guess I’ll go bake some cookies. ‘Tis the season, hummm?

Merry merry!

Looks like this is working again…. (knock–knock!)

Now, how weird is this?! I have been trying for nearly two weeks to load this photo here. My server’s tech help decided that the dsl modem they sent me was faulty and there’s a new one coming soon. But now this thing seems to be working again! Does AI go on vacations!
But… meantime, our local cafe is no more. Used to cook and waitress there many years ago back when it was a fun place. Now the nearest eatery where you don’t have to do your own cooking is 8 miles down the road and the owners there are really considering retiring. That’ll make the next nearest restaurant 40 miles away! Bummer…
We finally got a bit of snow but it’s being rained away as we speak. However, the snowpack ‘Up There’ is getting thicker. That’s what counts in the long run.
Hope you guys are having a safe & warm winter.:D
Merry Christmas!

Sorry…..

I’m having some problems with my computer or the server… we can’t agree which, but I cannot load pictures and outgoing email is very difficult too. We are working on the problem.
Meantime..
Happy Holidays to you all.

Hooray!

Bare Mountain isn’t bare anymore! Not a lot up there for this time of the year but it’s nice to see some white somewhere! We got a lot of rain out of this storm, tho not as much as I understand they got up north. Hope you folk in the Portland area are managing to stay fairly dry!
We’re to get another storm in a couple days. That’s okay, as long as it builds the snowpack. I got side tracked from my sweater with another little weaving project. I’ll post if it works! lol
Meantime… Hope you are all having a great winter and not getting stressed over christmas shopping and that sort of thing. Remember… it’s for FUN!

Wonder why it’s called Bare Mountain?

BareMt. (172k image)

Used to think it was because of the rock fields but this winter it’s just Bare of snow. Here it is the first of December and not a flake yet. Nothing to speak of in the forecast, either. I hope it’s not waiting until the last week of Dec when we have a trip planned! :O

My new scrap box

Strata2 (155k image)

Okay, got it done. That was easy! One 14″ square, sewn into a tube and fitted over the oatmeal box. I rolled the bottom under just enough to be able to glue it to the edge of the rim & let that dry. I used a knitting needle to remove the plastic rim at the top of the box (it’s the large Quaker Old Fashioned… yours may be different, and it had a bit of the cardboard stuck to it, which is good as I don’t think my Elmer’s glue would stick to the plastic.) I pulled the top edge over and glued it just inside the top rim. Once that was dry I spread glue on the paper part and fitted the plastic rim back in. This takes some fiddling as it is a much tighter fit now! But here it is, all set to collect my snippin’s. 😀

Trying it out

Strata (184k image)

I bought a skein of Red Heart’s attempt at worsted weight self patterning ‘sock yarn’. It’s really awful stuff for feel, rough. You couldn’t make something to wear next to your skin and I haven’t yet found a knit gauge that shows the pattern to advantage but thought I’d try it on the 14″ square loom. Not too shabby, I think. You could use it as a dish cloth. I’m going to use it to cover the oatmeal box I use as a container for my yarn snippets that I save for recycling. I’ll post a photo when I get it put together. I think I have enough yarn for at least one more 14″ square and I have used, I’m guessing, half of it knitting, so you could get several large squares from a skein. Anyway, I pronounce this yarn as fun as long as you don’t plan to wear it!:P
