‘Twas the knitters night before Christmas

‘Twas the knitters night before Christmas
Here’s a little poem sent me by a efriend in England, and a merry Christmas from my ‘girls’ all decked out in their seasonal outfits in front of the woodpile.
Addy, Samantha, Molly, Kanani. Lexi, Margaret, and Kirsten in her Julia wig.

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all around me,
Was unfinished knitting not under the tree.
The stockings weren’t hung by the chimney with care,
’cause the heels and the toes had not a stitch there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds
but I had not finished the caps for their heads.
Dad was asleep; he was no help at all,
And the sweater for him was six inches too small.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I put down my needles to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Tripped over my yarn and fell down with a crash.
The tangle of yarn that lay deep as the snow
Reminded me how much I still had to go.
Out on my lawn, I heard such a noise,
I thought it would wake both dad and the boys.
And though I was tired, my brain was a bit thick,
I knew in a moment, it must be Saint Nick.

But what I heard then left me perplexed-ed,
For not a name that I heard was what I had expected
“Move Ashford; move Lopi; move Addie and Clover,
Move Reynolds; move Starmore; move Fraylic–move over”
“Paton, don’t circle just stand in line.
Come now, you sheep wool work just fine!
I know it’s hard Noro, it’s just your first year,
I’d hate to go back to eight tiny reindeer.”

I peered over the sill, what I saw was amazing,
Eight woolly sheep on my lawn all a’grazing.
And then, in a twinkle, I heard at the door
Santa’s feet coming ‘cross the front porch floor.
I rose from my knees and got back on my feet,
And as I turned round Saint Nick, I did meet.
He was dressed all in wool from his head to his toe
And his clothes were handknit from above to below.
A bright Fairisle sweater he wore on his back,
and his toys were all stuffed in an Aran knit sack.
His cap was a wonder of bobbles and lace,
A beautiful frame for his rosy red face.
The scarf round his neck could have stretched for a mile,
And the socks peeking over his boots were Argyle.
The back of his mittens bore an intricate cable,
And suddenly on one I spied a small label.

SC was duplicate stitched on the cuff, and I asked,
“Hey Nick, did you knit all this stuff?”
He proudly replied “Ho-ho-ho, yes I did,
I learned how to knit when I was a kid.”
He was chubby and plump, a quite well-dressed old man,
And I laughed to myself for I’d thought up a plan!
I flashed him a grin and jumped up in the air,
And the next thing he knew he was tied to a chair.

He spoke not a word, but looked in his lap
Where I’d laid my needles and yarn for a cap.
He quickly began knitting, first one cap, then two;
For the first time I thought I’d really get through.
He put heels on the stockings and toes in some socks
While I sat back drinking Scotch on the rocks!
So quickly like magic, his needles they flew,
That he was all finished by quarter to two.
He sprang for his sleigh when I let him go free,
And over his shoulder he looked back at me.
And I heard him exclaim as he sailed past the moon,
“Next year start your knitting sometime around June!a

A little bit of Christmas weaving

Jan and I have been showing this doll in her shop. I made the outfits and the patterns and she is holding the raffle, the profits of which will go to the charity of the winner’s choice. I wrote up patterns for all but the poncho and hat, which are pretty simple. The patterns are available in Jan’s shop and also on Ravelry for those of you who don’t have access to the Sweet Sheep in Weaverville. It’s been a fun project. For the store patterns we made up little kits. The tutu pattern, for example, comes with the lace and a beaded necklace, Jan carries the yarns used. The Cropped Top and Low Rider shorts has the belt included. Sophia and her wardrobe will make some little girl happy this Christmas!

Winter’s on the way.

I know some of you are having more than enough already. We have our first snow predicted for tomorrow evening. We’re not ready, either! The garden is mostly put away and we’ve only one more trip. We’ll be in Grant’s Pass for Fiber Mania on Nov 12/13. That’s if the pass stays open!

But here’s Taz taking her ease on Randy’s lap, a sure sign of cold weather. This is the Mighty Hunter who does not come in before 10pm on summer evenings, but she appreciates a good warm fire when the temps reach freezing! As we all do. Randy’s looking at expensive tools on his laptop and I’ve weaving and reading my mystery by turns. If you’re looking for a project for the up coming season be sure to check the web site projects page where I’ve posted instructions for the Chirstmas Stocking.

Happy Birthday to our little namesake, Hazel Rose! She is two years old this month and it looks like the little woven doggy we sent was a hit.

I should have more rug pictures to post later today. I’ve been experimenting with I-Cord and I think that turned out well. It’s a little time consuming but is a way to use up lighter yarns. It will go faster, of course with a knitting machine. I’ll get some pictures today.

The project

I am starting to assemble the back but this is the front so far. Some people wanted to see.

You can count the squares. I am making the back of plain squares and haven’t yet decided about the sleeves. I think they’ll be textured, maybe, but of one pattern. Maybe.

New projects.

If I have anyone reading this blog, I have to apologize for letting it go so long. I didn’t realize it had been over two weeks since I posted! We’ve been busy with the kinds of things that happen in the spring. Those few days when it has not been raining are filled with outdoor chores and the rainy ones have been mostly in the shop or working on writing up weaving and knitting projects or… book work. 😦
But we do have one great project going. The new planter boxes around the deck! Randy has been working hard to get this done in time to start planting for this years garden. I have already planted peas and chard.

Here he is taking a well earned break. Good thing we have years of compost to use to fill them. But I am nearly though with a couple of projects, too, which I hope to be able to show you very soon.
Meantime, I hope your spring is becoming warm and sunny, too!

April!

It’s Really spring now! Warm, sunny, things starting to grow, birds carrying sticks, my birthday! The gal friends gave me a party, it was great fun to see everyone after being holed up all winter. We were all suffering from ‘cabin fever’.
And little Ellie Petunia’s mom brought me a picture of her sweet self wrapped in the blanket I made for her on the 6 inch Multi loom. It’s some nice Green Mountain Spinnery cotton and Mom says it gets softer all the time. Ellie is 6 months now and sat smiling and talking to us, such a good baby! I was happy to see the blanket in use, of course!

More weaving swatches

I’ve been working with this Coats & Clark Luster Sheen yarn. I like the way the yarn knits up but this colorway does not work with the pattern I wanted to use it for so I thought I’d give the looms a try. It really makes a difference on different looms. The square is the 4″ Multi woven diagonally and the other is the 4×6 Multi needle woven. Does not even look like the same yarn. This is a stash yarn, I guess I need to buy the new colorways for my project since these are not on their list anymore. I’ll have to test them out, too.
But I hope you are using your looms. I have a couple projects coming along. I’m not making great headway in this gloomy weather. Weaving time somehow seems to turn into nap time! lol;

January…

What can you say. it’s January. Kinda like Monday. lol Well, we have been at work in the loom shop, Randy is helping a friend move as well. They are giving up their grocery and gift shop here in TC. Just can’t make ends meet anymore. We are slowly becoming a ghost town. Very depressing, very January.

But on the other hand Randy did finish building a car for our grandson, a model of our old Jimmy, which he loved. I think it looks great. The real one is bright red but this one is walnut and maple.

I am knitting and weaving and reading and doing laundry and rearranging furniture… you know, the kind of stuff you do in January.

A WAL… a weave along!

We’re having a little Weave along on Ravelry Looms To Go based on the popular sudoku puzzles. Some of you can make your own patterns but I can never solve those things so have to ‘cheat” and get somebody else’s answers. I got one done and even assembled it wrong but it was too late by the time I discovered that so it stays! 😉 Anyway, if you have a square loom… it doesn’t matter which one or what size, come join us! This is my first one. I’m using the 2″ square and making a doll blanket. I like dolls (Did you guess! lol) and it will go fairly fast, leaving me time to fit it in with all the rest of the stuff on my to-do list.
We had a sunny day today with a high of 36. The Weather Wizards have promised us sunshine nearly all week and even a couple of degrees warmer days and nights. That would be good. Hope the sun is shining on you, too. Get out you looms and join our WAL!
