End of May…already!

I’m not getting much weaving done now days as it is panic time for Himself in the shop. Black Sheep Gathering coming up soon! But I am also spending some time in the garden. The peas and beans are growing very fast. I didn’t get many carrots from my first two plantings but I am going to try again. Maybe it was the cool weather.

And you may be tired of looking at this view, but I never do. The Snow White and Rose Red arch over my deck. The Blaze has never had so many flowers! The unknown white is one of those that just keep getting taller (or longer?) and blooms profusely every year. I want to get another one started this year if I can. I gave one to Sis and it now blooms 20′ up in a tree in her yard. It doesn’t photograph well, tho. Or maybe it’s me and my disabled camera. But it fills the yards with the most wonderful delicate scent!

Hope you are having a safe and thankful Memorial day.

Cotton top

Got my extra yarn from Webs so am starting on the sleeves again. I’m kind of playing this by ear, so am not quite sure how it’s going to work. Or frankly, IF it’s going to work. I’m going to weave the four 12″ squares and  see what it looks like and go from there. I’m thinking I might like set-in sleeves better than just square ones, which will mean some machine sewing- steeking- but I’m not sure how that will look with this design.

Meantime, I’ve been getting some gardening done, tho it’s still a bit early. In spite of warmer than normal temps, it’s still a bit chilly nights so I am rather pushing it. And now he’s getting going again in the shop, preparing stock for Black Sheep Gathering at the end of June, which means I’ll be out there more, too. Still, I have weaving time in the evenings  while the games are on! The Giants are doing great so far.

Hope things are warming up where you are!

Sleeves

I wove some 7″ triangles and made a sleeve. I think it’s going to work. I need to weave the other one and sew up the neckline a bit, it’s too wide as is. Then we’ll see.

Meantime I was playing with a little thing I found on a Brazilian Youtube. I did this experiment on the Tiny Weaver Square. It should have had 5 petals, but I wasn’t up to the math and just wanted to see how it would work. Kinda of cute. Takes a bit of time and  my warp was, in this case, too thick to really work well. There’s a rather too thick lump in the center where all the warps cross, but I can see uses for this sort of thing.

Assembling

Got the top pinned together and am sewing up the shoulders and sides.  Fit is pretty good, near as I can tell but…  same ole same ole… It needs sleeves. No, I need sleeves. I think this would be cute as a sleeveless top on someone with firm young arms. Mine need sleeves. Not sure how I’m going to go about that but will be working on it.  Here it is so far.

The front I assembled using a slip stitch in the darker yarn. The back is just an overhand stitch in the same yarn. I decided that if I was going to be wearing a target, it should be on the front and not the center of my back! More later!

A hail of a spring day!

Hail, rain, wind and all the while the sun shinning! lol Well, not all the while. It did gloom up now and then, too. And never did get very warm. Took my morning walk and then came back in and went back to weaving. Lookee there… it’s hailing again! I always feel sorry for the poor critters out there in that stuff. I remember many, many years ago walking home from school and got caught in a hail storm. Tried hiding under a hedge but finally ran to the nearest house and begged asylum. The lady let me come in until the storm passed. That was actually 60+ years ago and I remember it vividly! I hope all the critters can find a safe place to ride out these showers!

But back to weaving, the suns out again! lol I decided to make the center front yoke in the second color and weave it in a twill. I think it’s going to work.

Finished

Got it finished and done and wearing it. This just goes to prove my point about evolving projects. It is pretty much nothing like what I started out to make but I am delighted with it! I ended up not using the pattern for anything but some sizing and  there is absolutely no cutting or machine sewing in this one, either. So if you were expecting that ‘lesson’ I have to apologize but I’m sure I’ll get back to that one of these days, too. Now I have to figure out what to do with that other stack of squares I’ve woven up!

But if you have some lovely soft yarn in your stash, I encourage you to make something for yourself. Most of us have too many scarves and afghans already. This top is so lovely and soft against even my old hide that I don’t want to take it off!  I started posting about this one on March 20 and had a few squares woven at that time so it has taken me a bit under one month to complete this project. Since I remade the other shirt in that same time period, not to mention taking care of the rest of life as we all must, I don’t think it really qualifies as a long-term project, either.

So here it is… ta-da!

Still at it. I am starting the assembly but…

Meantime, the hall closet has reached critical so I had to undertake that task today. I’ve sorted a lot of it for goodwill but there are some things I just can’t see going there.  One is this collection of crocheted doilies. My grandmother, & mother’s work mostly, and some of mine. I kept the ones I just can’t bear to part with but there are more and they will never be used again here and my kids don’t want these things, they really don’t mean anything to them. I was wondering if any of you might do lace crafts and could use them. I have seen everything from Hostess aprons, vests, and blouses, to lamp shades made using vintage doilies. I am never going to have the time to use them myself and I would love them to go to someone who could appreciate the work that has gone into them and give them new life. They could, of course, be used as doilies but I know not many modern homes use those anymore. Still, if you would like this bunch of handmade lace, I would be happy to send it to you, just let me know soon.

The doilies are gone to a new happy home!

Patchwork experiment.

Okay, here it is. It took some finigeling but I think I got it. It’s still a bit too wide at the shoulders, but then the original shirt also was. I ended up making darts in the back of the shoulders which helped some. I like it much better than the original shirt, in any case.  Had to add a row on 2″ squares out of the bag at the neckline as it was a bit to low for the high cut sports bra which is my favorite. But I think they are kinda cute, anyway. So here’s the next steps. Mine- & you can see where to avoid this many with a little planning on yours!

Pinned the patchwork to the shirt at sleeve seam and shoulder.  Then top-sewed it down. >>> Then took out the shoulders because they were too wide. Sewed the dart in the back and the re-pinned and top sewed it again, easing the blocks. I also pinned and top sewed the bottom of the patchwork.

Image

Then I cut out the section of the shirt under this leaving a half inch of “seam allowance”  in case I needed it. You never know. I hope you can tell that this is inside-out here.

And now it’s done. I am pleased with it, all in all. Used up a bunch of squares out of the misc bag and have a colorful shirt to wear this summer just by remodeling one I already had and didn’t wear. Meanwhile, I am still weaving for the tunic. But there are more blocks in the misc bag, too….

Image

Just wanted to add a note here. I tossed this one in the washer with the regular laundry and it came out just fine. May have fulled a tiny bit but no shrinkage or distortion, not unraveling. Did just fine, which pleases me no end!

At it again

I am still weaving squares for my tunic but thought I’d do something with this bag of little ones, meantime. I think I mentioned that I’d… Had An Idea! So I worked on it a bit today.
Inspired by this shirt I found in the bottom of my drawer. Don’t know why I bought this, it’s an ugly man type shirt. Well, it’s red. I have a hard time resisting anything red.

Image

Laid out my blocks on it.

Image

Found a couple  wool ones and had to replace them as this will be tossed in the washer if it turns out wearable. Had to go so far as to weave one replacement.

Image

but I got them all assembled! Not too shabby and I still have the evening to weave on the tunic. But now I’d better go tend the spaghetti before Himself starts getting grumpy.

To be continued……………………………….

Misc.

Found one bag of misc small squares. Looks like there might have been at least two projects started and forgotten. ah well.

Image

I laid out  some that look like a good start on a summer patchwork top. But left the room and came back to find a helper. Since it was laid out on the bed, the largest work surface in this dinky house, I had to bag them back up, anyway, for the time being. Spent a few wakeful hours last night coming up with ideas. I may have figure something out here but it needs a little testing before I share it. Hang on…Image
